Highest Grossing Films

Here are the highest grossing films of all time (as off 2012). Interestingly the two highest grossing films were both directed by James Cameron. 

Avatar

Grossing nearly $2.8 billion worldwide Cameron's story of a paraplegic former marine who rediscovers himself on the distant planet of Pandora was a box office smash and became the best selling Blu-ray of all time. Filmed using cutting edge motion capture film techniques it cost an estimated $310 million to make and was heavily promoted to the tune of $150 million.

Titanic

Titanic was the first film ever to gross over $1 billion and was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards and won eleven including Best Picture. Originally released in 1997 it received a 3D makeover and was re-released in 2012 as Titanic in 3D to mark the centenary of RMS Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912. It currently has grossed over $2.1 billion.

The Avengers

Josh Whedon wrote and directed the Marvel Comic adaption which upon release was had the biggest opening weekend ever in North America and tied the record for the fastest film to gross $1 billion worldwide(19 days). Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd and Samuel L. Jackson the pic has currently grossed $1.5 billion.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

The eight and final installation of Harry Potter series created by J.K. Rowling was the most successful of them all and grossed over $1.3 billion and was the highest grossin film of 2011. The script was written by Steve Kloves and stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry alongside Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as Hermione and Ron.  

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Grossing over $1.1 billion this Michael Bay live-action film is the third in the Transformers film series with a sequel due in 2014. Released in 2011 it became the 10th film ever to gross over $1 billion. Starring Shia LaBoeuf the film was released in 3D and traditional 2D and featured 7.1 surround sound to highlight Bay's directorial style.
